Eye certificate Spurt

The vets Conclusion

”I did not get the impression of RPED / cPRA When I first looked at the dog, But there is always a variation between individuals, Which makes odd diagnosis difficult (I can note absolutely rule out a primary pigmentepiteldefekt, but it is in cases of a different type than those predisposed to the classic cPRA-change). In the current situation, we find that there is an extensive cone-rod degeneration in both eyes on Spurt and that we can not  exclude that this is a form of ”PRA”. Given that there is a serious change in his eye, I would not rule out that there is an inherited defect, and the presence of other related dogs with retinal degeneration contributing to fears that there is a hereditary disease. The closest we can get from what we know today is that it is a form of PRA. ”
The above is the short version of Prof B Ekestens exam. Unfortunately we do not know much more after that.
What we do know is that we have three cockers that in less than a year have had serious vision problems due to degenaration of the retina.

One is diagnosed cPRA / RPED, But the vet.panel was uncertain of the diagnosis, dogs were put down because of blindness in April 2009

One in 2009 was diagnosed General PRA, But DNA tested Normal/Clear for prcd-PRA. The bitch is now more or less blind.

Spurt is the third. ”some kind” of PRA. Heredity can not be excluded. DNA tested Normal/Clear. Spurt, 3 years of age, has in less than a year lost a great deal of his vision

Three cases of ”some kind of the PRA” in one year in a population with only 40-70 registered dogs per year …… There must be many cases around that could help us to understand what is going on

Field trial in Finland

I had the great pleasure to be invited to judge in Finland last weekend. The week before the trial I was waitning everyday for a messega that the trial was canceld because of the weather. We have had very cold and snowy here in Scandinavia, and the forcast said -20…… and strong wind!

No cancelation came so I tried to find every piece of clothing to help me survive and off I went to Tampere. The trial was held on a estate between Helsinki and Tampere and I did not really know what to expect. The gamekeepers – there where three of them full time all year (with a couple of during the season) had already catched all ther laying hens. Back in Sweden that normally means that there is not a lot of birds left in the ground – but not here. They have catched 1 500 hens….. and there where a couple thousends bird still out there!

The ground was very nice but it was up to 50 cm of snow at many places and – 22 Saturday morning. For once I am glad that I did not shoot!

The spaniel sport in Finland has a rather long tradition and in the past the field trials were very much adapted to the natural game supply and the national hunting tradition wich means that many of the trials are very different from them in Sweden or England.

This trial though was run very similar to an ordinary  field trial. As in many countries the rules differ a bit but overall we all look for the same qualties in our spaniels. And many of Finnish dogs were of very high standard. Strong hunters with good style. Superior stamina and capability to keep there act together as a dog should be run not less than one hour. One young bitch had at least 20 flushes and had a good bit over 50 birds on there wings – just in her second run.

The organization was Top Class and most of the people stayed in the same place (the finnish police dog training center) and we had all meals together wonderful prepared of some of the handler wifes! Of course the Finnish sauna was a must and after the sauna we had some great moments with the olympic winter games…(I did anyhow Markus Hellner made my saturday night) I think it was good though that the ice hockey match between Finland and Sweden was played on Monday morning when I was safly back home!

I want to thank my Finnish friends for a great weekend and for the possibility to judge there nice dogs!
